The primary method is to interbreed Grande and large Medio dogs to return to the breed purity. These flaws include a narrower head and corkscrew tail. There is currently some overlap between the Grande and Medio sizes as breeders work to breed out certain flaws caused when the Spanish hunting dog, Podenco Andaluz, interbred with the Podengo. The largest of the three breeds, the Grande can weigh from 44 to 66 File:Portuguese-Podengo-Large.jpg Since they are sighthounds they will chase animals and vehicles if not trained. They know what's going on around them and become suspicious of strangers. The Portuguese Podengo is a energetic and very social breed. They are intelligent and alert. They have been called “the world’s smallest hunting dog.” They were first brought to America in the 1990s by Portuguese-American immigrants and were mostly bred for hunting, not as pets. Surprisingly, the Pequeno size is also a hunting breed being able to hunt rabbits in the craggy Iberian countryside. The Grande size were bred to hunt boar and deer, while the Medio size was bred to hunt rabbits and other small mammals. It's believed they were brought to Portugal by the Phoenician, Roman, and Moorish traders and invaders. They were brought over to the Iberian Peninsula by the Romans and Phoenicians over 2,000 years ago. Their appearence has not changed one bit throughout history. The Portugese Podengo is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world.
